Six Signs of a Failing Dishwasher

Your dishwasher is one of your most critical appliances. Unfortunately, many issues can cause it to not work properly. Keep reading to learn about some early warning signs that this household essential appliance is about to malfunction.

1. Cold Plates and Utensils

If you find that your plates and utensils are cold, this is almost always a sign of problems. Usually, the issue is a clogged intake line or an issue with the intake valve.

2. Unusual Sounds

If you hear any strange sounds coming from your dishwasher, this typically signals that something is wrong. Some common dishwasher issues associated with the odd noises you might hear include:

  • Damage to the drain hose
  • Problems with the on/off switch
  • Nonfunctioning anti-flood device
  • Incorrectly loaded dishes
  • Loose screws or parts

3. Evidence of Water Leakage

You should not see water on the floor near your dishwasher. These leaks are typically caused by issues with the water lines in your system or a door that does not properly seal. A few other issues that can cause water leakage include:

  • Misalignment on the floor
  • Faulty valves
  • Clogged lines or drain

While an issue with your dishwasher is often the cause of water leaks, using the wrong detergent can also be the culprit. This is because foam may form in excess, which will cause a buildup of pressure. In some cases, excessive use of detergent or overfilling your dishwasher can cause the same problem.

4. Water Remaining in the Dishwasher

Another common warning sign is a faulty drainage line. Also, the valve leading to it may not be working properly. If this is the issue, the valve will need to be replaced. However, if the line is simply clogged, water will not be likely to end up on the floor. It will still remain after the cycle is complete, though.

5. Your Dishwasher Is More Than 12 Years Old

Most dishwashers have an expected lifespan of approximately 12 years. Keep in mind that some models stop working after eight years or so due to normal wear and tear, and others may last as long as 15 years.

6. Certain Buttons Not Working

If certain buttons of your dishwasher do not work, this could be a sign of electrical issues. Luckily, an appliance repair professional cause often easily fix these problems.
